Heidi's Globe Earrings
Tiny yellow continents
on bold blue seas,
twin planets in orbits
so highly irregular
that their astronomers
no doubt have all given up
seeking to understand
the scents and sounds
of their restless,
implacable heavens,
the inexplicable motion
-- like dangling --
of their hollow orbs
in unknowable space.
Their cartographers,
though, have easier work:
Each planet's surface is
emblazoned with place names,
even crisscrossed
with thick black lines
of latitude and longitude
for the convenience of
the brave navigators, who
-- though smaller than atoms --
never get lost.
