The Canoeist with Buzz-Cut Hair
Swain's Lock, 17 June 2001
He paddles slowly,
tenderly,
-- stroke, glide, stroke, glide --
eyes fixed on the smooth surface of the water
and the spreading ripples
as if the water were his lover,
as if he were
softly stroking her skin
with the sleek varnished wood.
